Griffin Montejo, Arizona’s first pediatric heart and liver recipient

In August 2023, 14-year-old Griffin Montejo underwent a rare and complex 14-hour heart and liver transplant—the first time this surgery had ever been performed in Arizona.

Born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS), Griffin had already endured three open-heart surgeries before age 3. Eventually he needed not only a heart transplant, but a liver transplant from irreversible damage.

For six weeks, Griffin’s mother, Danielle Montejo — now a nurse, inspired by her son — waited anxiously for the lifesaving call.

“It was difficult waiting for the call. Every day, any time I got a call with the hospital’s area code, I would jump to my phone and hoped that maybe that was it,” Danielle says.

When it finally came, Griffin entered surgery, and Danielle remembers the relief of receiving updates that his new heart was in and beating.

“That was just such a huge sigh of relief, and then a couple hours later, we got the text that the new liver was in and doing well,” she says.
Initially overwhelmed by becoming a medical “first,” Griffin now embraces the title with pride. He also hopes to one day meet the family of his donor.
